When I was asked to pen the first “Compliance Corner” article, it was suggested that I make it light and funny because… well… who likes compliance chat? No one? Right? But they’re important conversations and we want you all to make it to the end of the message.
But as I sit here at my desk, on my adjustable chair, under good lighting with my keyboard in the right position (you get the picture?… check your desk setup now!) I’m reflecting on the fact that it is R U OK? Day on the 12th September and that this is the right conversation for now.
If you feel like something’s not quite right with someone you know – trust that gut instinct and take the time to ask them “Are you OK?”.
So how do you ask, “Are you OK?”. Below is a flow chart to get you started. There are also many resources, hints and videos at https://www.ruok.org.au/to teach you how to recognise the signs that someone is struggling and have the “R U OK?” conversation.
So, if you are worried about someone: a colleague perhaps who just doesn’t seem themselves, or you would really like more information so that you can be prepared should you need to have an “are you OK?” conversation in the future, You’ve got what it takes to start a conversation that could change a life.
